RO Water Filter FAQ
What is Reverse Osmosis?
Reverse Osmosis is an advanced water purification process that uses your home’s water pressure to push tap water through a very fine, semi-permeable membrane.
This membrane acts as an extremely effective barrier, allowing only pure water molecules to pass through while removing up to 99% of dissolved contaminants. The impurities are then flushed safely down the drain.
While basic jug or fridge filters mainly improve taste and smell, a reverse osmosis water filter is fine enough to remove many microscopic pollutants from your water.
Because of this, a Reverse Osmosis water filter is considered one of the most effective ways to remove:
- ◆ Chemicals: Fluoride, chlorine, and chloramine
- ◆ Heavy metals: Lead, copper, and arsenic
- ◆ Emerging contaminants: PFAS (“forever chemicals”) and microplastics
- ◆ Biological contaminants: Bacteria, viruses, and parasites
The result is clean, safe, and great-tasting drinking water for your home.
What contaminants does reverse osmosis remove from water?
A high-quality RO water filter provides very thorough filtration, removing up to 99% of impurities that basic jug or fridge filters often leave behind.
It is highly effective at removing:
- ◆ Toxic chemicals: PFAS (“forever chemicals”), fluoride, chlorine, and chloramines
- ◆ Heavy metals: Lead, arsenic, copper, and mercury
- ◆ Microscopic contaminants: Microplastics, bacteria, viruses, and parasites
- ◆ Agricultural runoff: Pesticides, herbicides, and nitrates
- ◆ Physical impurities: Sediment, rust, and dissolved salts
By removing these contaminants, a Reverse Osmosis water filter not only improves water safety but also eliminates chemical smells and metallic aftertastes, leaving you with clean, crisp-tasting drinking water.
Is reverse osmosis water safe to drink?
Absolutely! Reverse osmosis water is one of the purest and safest forms of drinking water available, removing industrial chemicals, heavy metals, and PFAS from your tap water.
A common question we hear is whether RO water is “too clean,” since the filtration process also removes naturally occurring minerals. While mineral-free RO water is completely safe, it can taste very flat. We believe your water should also nourish your body.
That’s why we recommend a Reverse Osmosis system with an alkalisation and remineralisation stage. This restores essential minerals like calcium and magnesium naturally, making the water balanced, bioavailable, and gentle on your body.
The result is toxin-free, alkalised, perfectly mineralised water that is crisp, refreshing, and safe for daily hydration.
What are the advantages of using a reverse osmosis water filter in my home?
Installing a Reverse Osmosis water filter system turns your tap water into a reliable source of clean, healthy hydration. The key benefits for your home include:
- ◆ Total peace of mind: You know exactly what your family is drinking, with every glass free from hidden toxins, heavy metals, and “forever chemicals” like PFAS.
- ◆ Better taste: By removing chlorine and chemical runoff, your drinking water, morning coffee, tea, and home-cooked meals taste noticeably fresher and cleaner.
- ◆ Cost savings: No more buying expensive bottled water or constantly replacing cheap plastic jug filters.
- ◆ Eco-friendly convenience: Enjoy unlimited, ultra-pure water right at your kitchen sink, drastically reducing single-use plastic waste.
A Reverse Osmosis system is a one-time investment that boosts your family’s wellbeing, saves money, and makes staying hydrated effortless.
Are there any drawbacks to using reverse osmosis?
Reverse Osmosis systems provide incredibly thorough purification, and there are two things to be aware of:
- ◆ Mineral removal: The RO membrane removes not just toxins and heavy metals but also naturally occurring minerals.
The solution: Choose a system with an alkalising cartridge (like our 4- or 5-stage models) to restore essential minerals such as calcium and magnesium. - ◆ The “Reject” Water: Reverse osmosis is an active filtration process. To prevent the 0.0005-micron membrane from clogging, the system uses a constant flow of water to sweep the rejected contaminants (like fluoride and heavy metals) away from the membrane surface and down the drain. This means RO systems do produce a percentage of “reject water” for every litre of purified drinking water they create.
In short, the extra water usage is a minor trade-off for 100% confidence that your family’s drinking water is toxin-free and safe.
Can I install a reverse osmosis system myself, or do I need a professional?
It entirely depends on the system you choose and your comfort level!
- ◆ Countertop Systems: These require absolutely zero plumbing or permanent changes to your kitchen. They are perfect for renters. You simply attach the diverter valve to your existing standard kitchen tap in minutes, and you are ready to go.
- ◆ Under-Sink Systems: We designed our under-sink systems to be as straightforward as possible. They arrive completely pre-assembled with a comprehensive, step-by-step installation guide. If you are handy around the house, you can confidently connect the system yourself. However, any local plumber can easily install it for you in about an hour. Plus, our team is always here to provide local Australian support if you or your plumber have any questions during the install!
Are reverse osmosis systems suitable for bore water or areas with hard water?
Yes, a Reverse Osmosis system can be used for purifying bore water, however, the system needs the right setup to ensure it runs efficiently and the membrane lasts as long as possible.
Bore and hard water often contain high levels of calcium, sediment, and scale, which can clog the RO membrane if the water is not prepared properly first.
To protect your system, two things are important:
- ◆ Pre-filtration: Installing a Whole House Water Filter before the RO system is highly recommended. This removes heavy sediment and scale at the point of entry, protecting your under-sink RO system so it can focus on removing microscopic contaminants.
- ◆ Adequate water pressure: RO membranes require a minimum pressure of 40 PSI (ideally 60PSI) to push water through the membrane. If you use rainwater tanks or bore water, you will need a pump strong enough to maintain this pressure.
With these two elements in place, a Reverse Osmosis system can provide your home with clean, safe, great-tasting drinking water, no matter your water source.
What should I consider when choosing an RO system for my home?
Choosing the right RO filtration system depends on your kitchen space, your wellness goals, and the long-term running costs. Here are a few key things to consider:
- ◆ Placement & space: Do you have room under the sink for a 4- or 5-stage system, or would a countertop model that connects to your tap be more suitable?
- ◆ Your wellness goals: A standard RO system produces very pure, low-TDS water. Systems with an alkalising cartridge add beneficial minerals like calcium and magnesium back into the water.
- ◆ Ongoing maintenance: Some cheaper systems require expensive proprietary cartridges. Look for systems that use standard replacement filters to keep yearly costs affordable.
- ◆ Component quality: Make sure the filters come from a reliable source and are designed to remove contaminants effectively.
